CANOEING:SOLIHULL Canoe Club raced on the river Severn at the weekend with conditions for event promising fast times.

Unfortunately the division four singles race was marred at the start when the starter sent the 24 paddlers off approximately 30 seconds after giving a two minute warning.

Veteran Mark Wevill paddled and dealt with the portage confidently to finish eighth whilst club mates, Steve Wilkins (veteran) and Oliver Cook (junior), struggled to recover from the controversial start and finished 16th and 22nd.

James Leaper (junior) finished 11th in division 5 where the first three paddlers were promoted.

Isaac Webber (Junior) paddling in his first division 7 singles race finished a good seventh.

Veterans John Horne-Macdonald and Becky Farmer finished fifth and 14th in division nine where the first four finishers were promoted (the winner William Parker from Cardiff directly to division 6).

Oscar Huissoon continues to improve in the under 12 Lightning class finishing third and clubmate Matthew Cook completed the team’s singles results finishing fourth in under 10 Lightnings.

Veterans Richard Elliott and Andrew Penhallurick, the only division four ranked crew, finished third in the combined division 3-4 doubles race.

Juniors Ben Aston and Alexandra Farmer continue to score good club points finishing third in division eight.

Juniors Eva Penhallurick and Beatrix Huissoon (pictured) won division nine double with veterans Judith Leaper/Phil Higley paddling a much slower touring canoe scoring valuable points with sixth place.

In the inter-club competition the team were pleased to finish joint second with Royal Leamington Spa CC with the host club first.
