MIDLANDS Hurricanes suffered defeat in their first home league game under their new name at Portway after losing 54-16 to Swinton Lions.

Ben Stead, Anthony Boardman and Benn Hardcastle all crossed for the Midlands franchise who have now lost their opening two Betfred League 1 matches this season.

Swinton’s Deane Meadows crossed for the game’s first try when he finished underneath the posts from close range with Daniel Abram converting.

And Mitchell Cox quickly added Swinton’s second try after a clever break out of dummy half from Luke Waterworth with Abram adding the extras.

The visitors scored their third try soon after when Abram threw a dummy to create a gap in the Hurricanes defence before dotting down and converting his own score.

However, the home side responded when Stead burst through a gap to score the Hurricanes first ever try at their Portway home with Hardcastle converting.

And after the Hurricanes had Tyler Walton sent to the sin bin, Swinton struck again through Jack Spencer with Abram converting from right in front of the posts.

Despite still playing with a man short, the Hurricanes reduced the deficit when Boardman stretched over the line with Hardcastle unable to add the extras.

Swinton finished the half with a well-worked try in the right corner through Jayden Hatton with Abram adding a tricky conversion to send the visitors into the break with a 20-point lead.

However, the home side came out fighting in the second half and were handed a lifeline when Hardcastle collected a loose ball before dotting down and converting from the left-hand side.

The visitors diminished any hopes of a comeback when Lewis Charnock crossed from a short pass close to the line with Abram adding the extras.

And Swinton added their seventh try soon after when Jordan Case powered over with Abram again successfully converting.

Swinton added two further tries in quick succession when Mike Butt broke the line and ran in unopposed before Hatton collected a short goal-line dropout and raced over with Abram converting both scores.

A medical emergency in the crowd with five minutes left to play led to a delayed finish with neither side able to trouble the scoreboard further.
