Olton ladies go top after Buckingham win

OLTON Ladies continue to head Investec Ladies Conference West National League table after coming from behind to beat recently relegated Buckingham 2-1 at Grange Road on Saturday.

Olton spent a lot of time under pressure and conceded a tenth minute goal to last season’s Premier League side.

Last season that might have badly affected the morale of the team, but this year’s side battled hard and having kept a rampant opposition at bay, equalised through player/coach Sally Walton in the 45th minute.

Still both sides battled on and Mandy Gatherer broke the deadlock with a minute to go with a narrow angled short to secure a fine win against an excellent side.

The win moves Olton to the top of the table with a two-point advantage over second placed Trojans with all teams having played four matches.

This weekend Olton are in action again when they make the long trip to Exeter.

Olton’s men’s side were also in action at the weekend when they travelled to Manchester to take on Bowden in what was a nine-goal thriller in the National League Conference North.

The visitors took the lead in the tenth minute through Stuart Pilgrim but Bowdon hit back with two goals in two minutes.

Olton equalised a minute before half-time with a Steve Batten goal and they were soon trailing again in the second minute of the second-half, but Olton hit back thanks to goals from Dan Sulway in the 49th minutes and Chris Rawlings seven minutes later.

At this point in the match the visitors held a 4-3 advantage but two goals in the final three minutes ensured it was a frustrating drive home for Olton.

This Sunday Olton are at home to Oxton at Grange Road (1.30pm).
