LEAFIELD Athletic Ladies earned promotion to the FA Women’s National League, after a narrow 1-0 win over Goldenhill Wanderers crowned them West Midlands Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division champions.
Playing under the floodlights at Kidsgrove Athletic Stadium in Stoke, the two sides were keen to get forward and craft chances, but remarkably the game was deadlocked at 0-0 for the majority of the contest.
That was until Michelle McCormack stepped up to tee the ball up for captain Lily Eustace to drive home a long ranger into the back of the net to give Leafield the all-important goal.
The hosts came dangerously close to spoiling the party for the visitors, when a strike cleared the bar from close range with the ball bouncing dangerously in the box – to the relief of all in yellow and black.
Leafield lost out in the League Cup final against Sutton Coldfield Town 1-0, but hope to end their season on a high with a final win of the league campaign on Sunday – when they take on Stockingford AA Pavilion (2pm).
