ICE HOCKEY - Solihull Vixens denied double at play-off weekend by Guildford

SOLIHULL Vixens were denied a league and play-off double after they suffered a 6-4 defeat to Guildford Lightning at the play-off finals weekend in Widnes.

The Vixens romped to the Women’s Elite League title, losing just one of their 20 matches, only to fall short at the semi-final stage in the play-offs.

That was despite Solihull making a good start as Chamonix Jackson fired them into the lead on seven minutes.

However, Guildford levelled on 14 minutes before striking twice in the space of eight seconds to end the first period with a 3-1 lead and leave Vixens shell-shocked.

Solihull pulled a goal back shortly after the break through Saffron Allen to trail by a single goal heading into the third period.

And a frenetic affair ensued before another quickfire double from Guildford, in the space of three minutes, all but ended Vixens chances of a place in the final.

Paige Dance added to Solihull’s tally on 51 minutes before they were caught with numbers forward just two minutes later as Guildford restored their three-goal lead.

Vixens fought valiantly and were rewarded when Jackson scored her second of the game on 54 minutes but were unable to find the two goals needed to keep their double dream alive.

The Solihull club were presented with their league winners trophy and medals at the end of the game and will now regroup and refocus ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
