Earlswood Town progress in Smedley-Crooke cup

FOOTBALL: EARLSWOOD made the most of a well-earned rest from league duty to progress into the second round of the Smedley-Crooke competition thanks to a 3-1 victory over Upton Town.

Upton, who are amongst the frontrunners in the Cheltenham and District League Premier Division this season, fought hard all the way and took an early lead.

But the home side managed to get back on level terms through Matt Whitehouse and after the visitors struck the woodwork on a number of occasions, Lewis James fired Earlswood into a 2-1 lead at half-time.

Earlswood shaded the second half, although the visitors had plenty to offer, but 15 minutes from the end Dakari Mapp extended the home team’s lead after Earls had won a couple of corners of which the visitors keeper made two outstanding saves.

Mapp beat a defender and his shot from outside the penalty box went into the net via a post.

The visitors did have a couple of good efforts in the last five minutes bur Earls had done enough to advance to the next round when they will entertain Midland League Division 1 side Chelmsley Town.

This Saturday Earlswood host Coton Green for a place in the third round of the Birmingham Intermediate Vase.
