Double loss for Olton as outdoor season restarts

Solihull Editorial 8th Feb, 2018   0

HOCKEY: OLTON’s first teams returned to outdoor action following a lengthy break to compete in indoor national competitions.

The Ladies’ first team played host to table topping Trojans.

After beating Olton 2-1 earlier in the season, Trojans made no mistake in completing the double with a confident away display.

The home side played some good hockey and at half-time there had been no goals.

Work with training and friendlies preparing for this game looked as though they would pay dividends.

But 20 minutes into the second half, the visitors scored from a penalty corner.

Despite Olton throwing everything forward for the last 15 minutes, they couldn’t find their way through the visitors defence.

The result was disappointing, but the performance, against a very good team, wasn’t.

Olton go into next week’s game away to Cannock fully expecting to come home with three valuable points.

Meanwhile the men’s team made the short trip to University of Birmingham for their first game before Christmas.

Most of the squad had been involved playing indoor hockey and earned promotion from Division Two to Division One.

However, they were a little rusty at playing the outdoor game but soon settled down to the task in hand.

University scored from open play after 18 minutes and followed up 10 minutes later with a second.

Olton responded with a goal in the next minute which saw the game evenly balanced 2-1 at half time.

The students increased their lead 13 minutes into the second half and despite a valiant effort from Olton, they couldn’t get the breaks that they desperately needed.
