THE co-founder of a women’s boxing club in Birmingham says funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner will allow more women to try their hand at the sport.
WBC Women’s Boxing Club has received more than £4,000 to help it grow and thrive.
The club, based in Highgate and Sheldon, was set up so women who wanted to box could do so in a safe space specifically for women.
Many of the women who attend the club live with mental health issues and have experienced trauma, such as domestic violence.
The club offers a great support network and environment for the women to build back their confidence and meet women with similar experiences, whilst also getting fit and learning a new skill.
When gyms were closed due to the Covid 19 pandemic, WBC organised two bike rides a week to support the mental health and wellbeing of the women in the local community.
The club also work alongside schools in order to reduce anti social behaviour. WBC encourage the children to learn self-discipline, how to channel their emotions and treat people respectfully.
WBC aims to bring communities together by welcoming women from every faith and background.
Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Waheed Saleem, who oversees the Community Initiatives Fund said: “I am delighted that we have been able to provide £4,400 of funding to WBC Women’s Boxing Club for them to continue their excellent work with women in the local community.
“The work WBC Women’s Boxing Club do to create a supportive and welcoming environment for women to get fit and socialise in, during a time when a lot of people are feeling isolated due to the Coronavirus pandemic, is fantastic.”
Mav Akram, co-founder of WBC, said “WBC Womens Boxing Club has worked to bring together women from all communities, ages and backgrounds to give them an opportunity to learn to box, keep fit, meet other women and make friends and most importantly encourage them and build their confidence.
“The Community Initiatives Funding will allow the club to continue to promote and get more women involved in the sport of boxing.”
