Super fundraiser Joyce up for national award

Solihull Editorial 8th Jun, 2022   0

A COURAGEOUS Solihull woman who has raised more than £200,000 in her fight against cancer, has been nominated for a national award.

Joyce Rothschild is up for a JustGiving Award, which recognises fundraisers that go above and beyond for Macmillan Cancer Support.

After Joyce was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997, she decided to raise money for her local cancer centre by hosting a quiz.

Now, 25 years later, the quiz is still going strong – and has raised over £200,000 for charity in the process.

The 68-year-old said: “My cancer was quite aggressive, and I had a mastectomy, along with additional surgery to remove my lymph nodes.

“At the time, the hospital unfortunately didn’t have a specific piece of equipment to measure the spread of the cancer without removing my lymph nodes, and so I decided to try and raise some money for the equipment – which is how the quiz came about.”

“I wanted to keep my mind occupied during chemotherapy and thought it would be a good opportunity to hopefully raise a few hundred pounds for the centre, but to my complete surprise, the quiz raised over £2,000, and so I have continued to host it annually ever since.

“Our 25th quiz took place in January and raised £22,514, which shows just how much it has grown over the years.”

The quiz now has over 2,000 participants taking part each year, many of whom have been personally affected by cancer.

Macmillan Cancer Support helps those with cancer and their loved ones by providing emotional and practical support.

Macmillan’s relationship fundraising manager, Jayna Kawa said: “We are so proud of Joyce and so grateful to her for the support she has shown Macmillan over the last 25 years.

“We are delighted that she has been nominated for a JustGiving award and recognised for the amazing and loyal fundraiser that she is.

“To overcome cancer and use her own experience to raise vital money to help others going through the same thing is truly inspiring, and to do so for 25 years is a huge achievement.”

Nominations close on June 19.
