Spire duo get pedalling for a good cause in fundraising bike ride

COVID restrictions didn’t put a damper on the spirits of local physiotherapists Bianca Broadbent and Amit Rao, from Spire Parkway Hospital, Solihull as they took on Spire Healthcare’s Cambridge bike challenge.

On July 9, a team of Spire riders, including Spire chief executive Justin Ash and chief finance officer Jitesh Sodah, cycled 100miles around Cambridgeshire.

Meanwhile Amit undertook his own challenge and rode from Spire Parkway to Cambridge to meet up with the team.

“I was undaunted by the challenge, I love to cycle and often take part in a number of bike rides,” he said.

“I enjoy the physical exertion and achievement you feel at the end of the ride, and with it all being for a good cause it’s well worth the effort.”

It was all in aid of the Trussell Trust, the UK charity supporting a nationwide network of more than 1,200 food banks which provides emergency support to people locked in poverty.

Whilst Amit took on his own route, bike specialist Bianca Broadbent joined the Spire team in Cambridge for the 100mile ride.

Bianca, has worked with some of the sport’s elite athletes during her time at the Boardman Performance Centre (founded by Olympic Gold medallist Chris Boardman) in Evesham, as well as treating professional cyclists.

“I’ve always had a great interest in cycling, it’s a great way to keep active and enjoy some fabulous country views, as well as having great health benefits,” she said.

“Cycling improves many musculoskeletal ailments as well as helping to reduce high blood pressure and the incidence of type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even improve mental health.”

Whilst Spire Healthcare awaits to hear the final total of money raised for the Trussell Trust, they’ve encouraged hospital staff to get involved in a number of virtual events to boost fundraising and bring everyone together.
