Runners called upon to sign up to the 36th Knowle Fun Run

Solihull Editorial 6th Mar, 2019   0

RUNNERS are being called upon to pull on their running shoes and take part in the 36th annual Knowle Fun Run.

At this year’s Knowle and Dorridge Lions organised event on May 19, runners of all ages will be able to choose between completing 10k over two extended laps or 5k one lap starting at Arden Academy.

This year the Lions have adopted two partner charities – Solihull Life Opportunities (SoLO) and the UK Sepsis Trust.

The lions will also donate some of the funds raised to other local causes.

As well as individual and team competitions over both distances, there will be a prize for the most original fancy dress outfit and the usual Kidsruns for those in years one to four.

This year the event organiser Adrian Harris has welcomed West Midlands Mayor Andy Street who will be getting runners underway at the starting line from 11am.

Mr Harris added: “Andy will then jump down from the starter’s rostrum and run the 5k – one lap through the traffic-free streets of Knowle cheered on by residents who turn out to support all the runners, before returning to award prizes for all the winners.”

Last week Andy came along to Arden Academy in Knowle to meet the Lions organisers and the partner charity fundraisers and to familiarise himself with the course.

Mr Street said: “I was really surprised when the Lions invited me to start the Knowle Fun Run and to award the winners prizes.

“I had no hesitation in accepting especially when I read that the benefitting charities are The UK Sepsis Trust – who do so much to raise awareness of Sepsis and supporting those affected by it, and SoLO Life Opportunities – who do great work adding value to the lives of over 1,000 children and adults with learning disabilities in Solihull.

“I asked the Lions if I could actually run the Fun Run as well as starting it, as I really want to enjoy the atmosphere generated by so many charity runners – and they have said ‘yes’, so I’m committed now.”
