A MOTHER who was represented by Max Clifford after discovering she was having octuplets has claimed she was used as a “money-making machine” by the disgraced celebrity publicist.
Mandy Allwood, who lived in Solihull at the time of her remarkable multiple pregnancy, claims she was promised huge sums of money before losing her eight babies in 1996 – something which she says Clifford showed no sympathy over.
The now 49-year-old, who lives in Stratford, was offered the chance to terminate some of the foetuses to give the others a chance to survive but declined and the six boys and two girls all died within an hour of being born.
She said the final straw came in an interview with a TV station who told her they had offered Clifford nearly £500,000 for her story – but he told her the fee was only £20,000.
In an interview she said: “He is a devil, a manipulative selfish predator. He preys on people’s vulnerablity and had no consideration for my wellbeing. He didn’t once say ‘how are you Mandy?’
“He knew I was vulnerable but was just interested in lining his own pockets.
“I was a money-making machine for him. He thought he was invincible.”
After her loss she was interviewed on the Oprah Winfrey show and even received a letter from Princess Diana expressing her condolences.
She successfully sued Clifford in 2001 claiming he had made “considerably more” out of the tragedy than she had.
The pervert PR guru was recently found guilty of a number of indecent assaults on young girls and was the first person to be convicted under the high profile Operation Yewtree in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.
Mandy’s life spiralled into depression and alcoholism after her brief period in the spotlight.
Before moving to Stratford she lived in Warwick for a number of years where she was given an Anti Social Behaviour Order due to her self-confessed drink problems.
Mandy now has two healthy daughters but still battles depression and her alcohol addiction.
Since moving to Stratford she helps a group of friends who also suffer from depression.
