Lib Dem leader rues the 'sting in the tail' of JLR announcement

‘GOOD for Solihull but a shock for regional jobs’ is how Solihull Councillor Ade Adeyemo responded to Jaguar Land Rover’s future plans.

Coun Adeyemo (Lyndon), Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Solihull Council, said: “I welcomed the news of Jaguar Land Rover’s announcement that the Lode Lane plant in Solihull would be the focus of its future electric vehicle production.

“l was also pleased to see the commitment of Solihull’s largest employer to the production of cleaner and greener vehicles.

“What is now clear is that changes at Jaguar Land Rover will not be limited to new electric models.

“The sting in the tail is the loss of 2,000 jobs in the next 12 months.

“This is really bad news for workers at Jaguar Land Rover and a severe blow for the automotive industry in the West Midlands.

“Car sales across the UK have slumped over the past year and the Covid crisis, poor international sales and the UK’s exit from the EU have all hit Solihull’s largest employer badly.

“The Jaguar Land Rover plant on Lode Lane in Solihull is in an area represented by four Liberal Democrat councillors.

“Our immediate thoughts are with the thousands of JLR workers who are set to lose their jobs, at Jaguar Land Rover, and also within the supply chain.

“Many of these workers are local residents. We will be doing our best to support them as best as we can at this difficult time.”
