Gypsies descend on Damson Park

Solihull Editorial 29th Jun, 2015 Updated: 21st Oct, 2016   0

REPORTS of dog attacks, threatening behaviour and anti-social behaviour have already surfaced just days after travellers illegally ‘set up camp’ in Damson Park.

Around 25 caravans and their associated vehicles have flouted the law and descended on the Damson Lane recreation ground since Friday (June 26).

Local residents are up in arms about the invasion – taking to social media to express their anger at the breaking of laws and behaviour of the travellers.

One angry local told The Observer they were sick of the travellers who keep on abusing Solihull.

“They ilegally take over our play areas and green spaces, behave terribly, threaten people, upset people and leave a god-awful mess behidn when they move on,” they said.

“I’m all for the proper Romany Gypsy life, but just having a caravan and staying somewhere for free, in the middle of towns and where families are using facilities, is disgraceful.”

A Solihull Council spokesperson said Solihull Council is aware that travellers moved onto Damson Park.

They added: “Officers have been out on site to undertake a full assessment of the group and the Council is doing everything it can within its power to move the travellers on and out of the park as soon as possible.

“The Council and the Police are continuing to monitor the site regularly.”
