Grieving brother injured in funeral wake attack

Solihull Editorial 15th May, 2015 Updated: 21st Oct, 2016   0

CCTV footage has been released of a group of drinkers who attacked a 61-year-old man while he attended a wake at a Solihull pub.

The victim was outside the Olton Tavern, on Lode Lane, waiting for his wife when he asked a group of men on the next table to quieten down.

A banana skin and a shot glass were hurled at him by the yobs, and when another man asked them to calm down, he was knocked over and struck on the head.

The mourner was then kicked and punched by the group after he had fallen to the ground.

PC Chris Parry, from the violent crime team at Chelmsley Wood police station, said: “This was a violent and completely unnecessary attack on two men who had been minding their own business before the group began to pick on them.

“The level of violence was completely unprovoked and particularly distressing, given that the two men had just laid a close relative to rest.

“The 61-year-old suffered cuts and bruising to his face and upper body and a nasty ear injury which needed hospital treatment.”

The two main offenders are both as white, in their 20s.

One was around 6ft tall, of stocky build, with tattoos on his arms.

The second man had short fair hair.

Anyone with information should call Force CID at Chelmsley Wood on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
