SILHILLIANS are being invited to raise a cuppa and have a slice of cake in memory of MP Jo Cox in Chelmsley Wood at an event which aims to bring communities together.
The Great Get Together will take place from 11am until 1pm tomorrow (Friday) at the Three Trees Centre on Hedingham Grove and has been organised by the centre and Meriden MP Dame Caroline Spelman.
The event, which is part of a UK wide initiative, aims to bring together people of different faiths and backgrounds in celebration of Jo Cox’s belief that we have more in common than that which divides us.
To commemorate the first series of national Get Together, Dame Spelman has invited local charities and support services including Gro-Organic, the job centre, The Haven Breast Cancer Charity and the Welcome Charity to speak about the work they do.
All profits from the Three Trees Centre event will be donated to Welcome, a drug and alcohol treatment and support service: The Haven, a support service for people with Breast Cancer and Three Trees Centre.
Dame Caroline said: “I am delighted to be able to host the first Meriden Great Get Together in honour of my late colleague, Jo Cox MP and to celebrate all that makes our community a great place to live, work and enjoy.
“Jo inspired us all when she said that ‘We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us’ and it is in that spirit of friendship that I invite everyone in our community to join in the fun this Friday.
“Proceeds from the sale of all refreshments will be donated to local charities – so please come along, and enjoy a slice of cake and a cup of tea with your friends and neighbours.
“Or alternatively, why not drop in and meet with some of the many of the voluntary organisations who touch the lives of so many people in our community as we celebrate all that is great about the Meriden constituency together.”
