Footbridge installed across A45 in Solihull

A VIDEO has been released of a new footbridge being installed across the A45 in Solihull.

The footage created by National Highways shows the work of lowering the bridge into place as part of a £282million upgrade to junction 6 of the M42.

The bridge means pedestrians will be able to safely walk and cycle over the A45 to travel between Bickenhill and Catherine-de-Barnes, the NEC, Birmingham International railway station and the airport.

The A45 was closed overnight last Saturday, April 30, while the 92-tonne bridge was lowered into place.

National Highways programme lead, Anita Prashar, said: “We’re keen to make sure that this scheme benefits the local community as well as motorists and this new footbridge will make crossing the A45 much safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists.

“The installation of the footbridge is a key milestone in the project and we’re making good progress on the upgrade of junction 6, which once completed will make journeys much smoother for motorists.”

It is believed that traffic congestion and poor journey reliability have constrained investment and economic growth around the M42 at junction 6.

Once finished, the project will support planned development by improving access to HS2, the NEC, Birmingham Airport and UK Central.
