Family reunites for Shirley care home resident's 99th birthday

A FAMILY was reunited when a Shirley care home resident celebrated a birthday which was special for more than one reason.

Florence Brimson had two great reasons to be cheerful for her 99th birthday.

She became the first resident to celebrate a birthday at The Fountains Care Home, which opened in May.

And because the Stratford Road home had just relaxed visiting rules to allow socially distanced garden reunions, Florence was able to celebrate with her family.

Florence Brimson enjoyed a socially-distanced visit from her family on her 99th birthday (Florence’s face not shown to comply with Data Protection regulations).

Staff at the home laid on the celebration with help from the nearby Tesco Extra Supermarket, which donated a birthday hamper including a bottle of champagne, chocolates and biscuits.

Florence, who was the first person to move in to the care home in May, also enjoyed a special birthday cake made by the home’s chef Daryl Frost, decorated with sparklers.

On Florence’s birthday (Saturday July 4), she enjoyed four lots of visits from her family and enjoyed a second birthday cake baked by her daughter Hillary.

The home’s acting general manager Mel McHugh said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating this special day with Florence and as our first resident to move in, as well as our first resident to celebrate a birthday with us, it’s been a very special occasion.”
