Company to build multi-storey car parks near HS2 Interchange station revealed

Solihull Editorial 11th May, 2022   0

PLANS to build two multi-storey car parks near the HS2 Interchange Station have been handed to a construction company.

The Urban Growth Company (UGC) has appointed VINCI Construction UK as its design and build contractor for the car parks.

It is hoped the 4,500 to 7,000-space car parks will be open before 2033, ready for when the high speed rail is up and running.

VINCI will need to secure full planning permission for one of the car parks and outline planning permission for a second.

Alongside VINCI, additional planning and architectural design support will be provided by Cundall, Associated Architects and Fira.

This comes after plans to provide surface car parking were changed to release about 30 hectares of land, paving the way to create thousands of new jobs and homes up to three years earlier than originally planned at the Arden Cross site.

It follows an announcement last year that central government would provide a grant of £50m, alongside a £45m loan from the West Midlands Combined Authority, to fund the project.

Sue Barrett, chief operating officer at the UGC, said: “This project is about so much more than a car park – it’s about working in partnership across the public and private sectors to agree an alternative proposal which delivers the full economic, social and environmental benefits we know to be possible here.”

The appointed team has already consulted with the local community and other stakeholders about the early design and landscaping possibilities for the car parks.

Responses to the initial consultation are currently being assessed before a second round of consultation to seek further feedback is carried out.

The planning application will then be submitted to Solihull Council this July, with a decision expected by December 2022.
