SCHOOLCHILDREN were given the chance to find out what life is life for a trainee firefighter.

Pupils from Balsall Common Primary School took to the classrooms at the Fire Service College in Moreton-in-Marsh with Steve Skarratt, Head of Prevention and Protection Training and Justin Thorn, Head of Operational Training for the day.

They were given some of the basic dos and don’ts of fire before they headed off to put their new skills into practice by being an incident commander and directing a fire crew.

The children experienced first-hand just how difficult it is to control a simple house fire and how the Fire Service need to coordinate with the other Emergency Services.

They also saw how firefighters trained for major disasters and even had a go at build up the fire truck’s hose and getting water from a reservoir and then spray the hose as if they were in a real life situation.

Class teacher, Miss Bains, said, “This was a fantastic, energetic trip with lots of valuable learning.

“The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and couldn’t wait to get their hands dirty.

“They didn’t want to leave, especially after riding around in the Fire Appliance.”
