A WOMAN from Balsall Common defied all odds to double her fundraising target as she ‘Braved the Shave’ for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Zoe Speed raised over £1000 for the cause after shaving her hair on Saturday (October 10) in memory of her late Grandmother.
To add to the main fundraising even, Zoe also hosted a coffee morning, tombolas and a children’s lucky dip to help eclipse her initial £500 target.
Balsall Common’s Jubilee Centre hosted the head shave and Zoe expressed her delight to those who turned out.
Zoe said: “The day went really well and we had some fantastic support from the local community.
“On the day we managed to raise £440 which was beyond all my expectations, it’s certainly motivated me to ponder doing more charity events in the future.
“It’s clear that people responded to our posters – the day was just so busy – everything ran so smoothly and our raffles helped break the £1000 mark.”
The mother of two is currently attending Solihull College, studying at higher education level which will enable Zoe to become a nurse next year.
Zoe explains that her inspiration is entirely down to her Grandmother and the support she – and her family – received from the Macmillan nurses.
She added: “My Grandmother was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer last December and was given just six weeks to live.
“She passed away in February and it all happened very suddenly and we barely had time to process what was happening.
“She was happy, comfortable. and we have those memories to hold on to – I’m so very greatful to have the last few memories of her being in her own home.”
