All aboard the double-decker library at school

PUPILS at Gilbertstone Primary School can now curl up with a good book in one of the borough’s most unusual libraries.

The red bus – named Gilbert – was donated to the Yardley school by National Express following the vehicle’s retirement from service.

Thanks to funding support and volunteers from HSBC through the bank’s Supporting Our Community Programme, the bus has been transformed into a library, reading and outdoor space for all the pupils to enjoy.

Laura Himmons, Gilbertstone Primary School Deputy Head, said: “The children are absolutely thrilled with Gilbert the bus and can’t wait until the library opens later this year.

“We chose a bus as a new library because we wanted to create an engaging atmosphere to foster a love of reading.”

HSBC staff visited the school preparing the school grounds for the bus renovation, including jet-washing paths, clearing weeds and laying turf.

Darren Vincent, business performance and steering at HSBC, said: “We’re so pleased to be able to give back to the community and help Gilbertstone Primary School with their new library.

“Our team will be back to help catalogue the library’s books this October as well as supporting with the refurbishment of the bus into a fun reading space for the children.”
