ACOCKS Green shoppers have named an independent hardware shop has their ‘Village Hero’ in the launch of a new campaign to celebrate local shops.
Over the last couple of months shoppers have been nominating their favourite trader in the retail centre, stating why they think it should win.
Several businesses were nominated but it was the volume of nominations for Jeffries Hardware, as well as the glowing recommendations, which sealed the businesses win in this first round.
Amongst the tributes paid the shop were that 'Nothing is too much trouble and advice is always based on the best value for money' and 'The Jeffries family do a lot behind the scenes for the community and take a keen interest in all village meetings'.
The campaign was set up by the Village Partnership and the Centre Manager - Melinda Brown - whose role is part of Birmingham City Council’s drive to support local retail centres across the city.
Initiatives from the City Council to support small businesses include a Retail Development Programme, Business Rates Hardship Fund and Business Development Fund.
Ian Jeffries, whose father originally started the business over 40 years ago said: “It is a huge compliment to win this award and I am extremely proud of my staff who do deliver exceptional service and pride themselves on looking after our customers.
"With so much competition from other terrific shops in Acocks Green we feel honoured that our customers went to the trouble of voting for us.”
Town Centre Manager Melinda Brown added: “It just goes to show that shoppers do value traditional businesses with traditional values - of which we have many in the Village and that these businesses still manage to compete with the bigger players."
