THOUSANDS of pounds have been raised across the borough for the ongoing crisis following the earthquake in Haiti.
The 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck at 10pm on January 12 leaving more than 150,000 people confirmed dead and over 1.5 million people homeless.
Kind hearted folk across Solihull and the borough have been helping out in their droves, helping drive the major appeal launched by the UK Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) and dozens of other international charities.
On Tuesday (February 2), Gill Murphy, manager of the Solihull Oxfam store based on Station Road, told us her Haiti Appeal was running close to becoming their most successful yet.
She said the store had raised close to £1,500 - second only to the Tsunami Appeal in 2004.
"We are still urging everyone across the area to donate any stock they may have to our appeal," Gill added.
The Haiti Fund-raising Night, run by Solihull Oxfam at the Indigo Express takeaway in Olton, also managed to raise £350.
Across the borough, staff and pupils at St Martin's School, in Brueton Avenue, raised just over £350 with a Hair For Haiti Appeal.
School spokeswoman Jane Webber said pupils donated cash straight to DEC in return for coming to school with outrageous hairstyles for a day.
Next month will also see Ball For Haiti, an event being run by a group of teachers from across Solihull to raise money for the crisis appeal.
The ball takes place at St John's Hotel, in Warwick Road, on Saturday, March 20, and includes a Bucks Fizz reception, a raffle, to three course dinner, dancing and a tombola.
Tickets cost £35 and can be bought by sending a cheque - made payable to Ball For Haiti - to 51 Langfield Road, Knowle, Solihull, B93 9PS. Tickets will be issued on a first come, first served basis and will be sent two weeks prior to the event.
