With Skyfall, the new James Bond film, on the verge of being released there is feverish speculation about what the new film will offer. Pre-release rumours suggest that it will be a more action-driven, fun outing for 007, following a couple of uncharacteristically intense, emotional outings for the suave secret agent, but at the moment it all remains up for debate. However, these are a few elements that most will be gambling on featuring at some point in the new film.
This one seems a fairly safe bet, as the minimal information that has been made available about the Skyfall plot indicates that it revolves around a secret from the past of Bond’s boss – played by Judi Dench – returning to haunt her and testing the loyalty that Bond has towards her. Therefore we can presumably expect M to play a more central role in the new film, as well as more exploration of the relationship between her and Bond than we have seen before.
Daniel Craig has let it be known in several interviews that he favoured a less intense Bond this time round, following the story arc that saw him fall in love with Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, before trying to avenge her death in Quantum of Solace. Therefore we can perhaps expect the character to be closer to that played by Sean Connery, although the M storyline suggests that this will still be balanced by greater depth of characterisation.
There are certain things – including mad gadgets, gambling at casinos and martinis shaken, not stirred – that everyone associates with Bond, and his Aston Martin car is undoubtedly one of those. Photographs from the set during filming indicate that it seems set to make a comeback in the new film, which will fit with the return to a tradition ‘feel’.
