ROTARY International’s 2009 convention is heading to Birmingham from June 18 to 24 and on Saturday, June 20 The NIA will host a special concert featuring a night of fantastic music from Katherine Jenkins and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
Normally only open to Rotary Club members this year's headlining event will also be open to the public.
The concert will see Welsh songstress Katherine Jenkins and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra performing a night of popular music, which will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture featuring lights and cannons.
The world’s top selling Mezzo Soprano Katherine Jenkins is in a league of her own having outsold such opera greats as Maria Callas and she is the only singer in musical history to simultaneously hold the number 1, 2 and 3 position in the album charts which she did with her three albums Premier, Second Nature and Living the Dream in 2005.
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is the resident orchestra of Symphony Hall in Birmingham and is one of the world’s leading symphonic ensembles having worked with many leading international conductors since its inaugural concert in 1920, conducted by Sir Edward Elgar.
The Orchestra established itself as a major force during its 18-year association with Sir Simon Rattle, and has continued to prosper under the Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo, who was appointed Principal Conductor in 1998 and Music Director in 1999.
The CBSO is in constant demand to perform all over the world. Recent tours have included concerts in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, and Taiwan, in addition to regular appearances at the BBC Proms and the prestigious Aldeburgh Festival.
This single performance brings Katherine Jenkins together with the full 90-piece CBSO and is part of the celebrations surrounding the 100th Rotary International Convention taking place in the City from 18 to 24 June.
Tickets for the concert are priced £28 and £38 plus transaction fee and can be purchased on-line at theticketfactory.com or by calling The Ticket Factory on 0844 33 88 000. Only 50 per cent of the tickets are on sale to the general public so demand for them is expected to be high and early booking is advised.
