WELL the term has ended at Westminster and the summer – if you can call it such - is upon us.
Looking back, I’ve been able to make a significant contribution on Bills to improve the lot of tomorrow’s pensioners, Estate Agent regulation and consumers’ interests, and protecting young people from forced marriage.
I have introduced my own Private Member’s Bill to provide more flexible working: something I believe will not only be good for hard working families, but be good for business too. The second reading is on the 19th October, together with Lib Dem MP Andrew Stunell’s Bill on phone masts, though we may run out of parliamentary time before either can be debated.
However, there is more than one way to skin a cat, and we shall continue the fight on these and other issues such as back garden development to achieve concessions from government.
New Prime Minister Gordon Brown has reorganised many government departments including my own shadow brief for the DTI, which is now the Department of Enterprise, Business and Regulatory Reform. Doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue, does it!
The reorganisation has given me the opportunity to drop my Women and Equalities brief to concentrate on business and enterprise. Holding two very broad briefs does not enable you to give proper attention to either, so I was sad but pleased to hand the baton for women and equalities to my colleague Jo Swinson.
As an MP you can have the opportunity to speak on most subjects affecting your constituency, and I’ve also been able to speak on alternative energy technologies with Greenpeace, waste reduction regulations, British Waterways and against the disgraceful so-called Freedom of Information Bill which does just the opposite: shielding MPs from the proper scrutiny which should be given to their personal expenses, among other things.
I will continue to carry the flag for Solihull on the future of Land Rover which will have an enormous impact here and across the West Midlands.
Looking forward, the summer is a great time to spend in Solihull and invite people on their doorsteps to tell me about what is really bugging them. While I get literally thousands of emails and letters, it’s also important to listen to the views of those who don’t write to me or visit my surgery.
So I hope to see you before Parliament resumes in October, but don’t wait for me to turn up on your doorstep. You can always contact me at burtl@parliament.uk or write to 41 Warwick Road B92 7HS
