THE FARMERS at the centre of the foot-and-mouth crisis are the victims of circumstances beyond their control. The second case of the disease was confirmed on a farm in Surrey on Tuesday (August 7), amid speculation a government research facility could have leaked the virus.
Meat exports have been banned and fears of a repeat of the 2001 outbreak which saw seven million animals slaughtered, are on the forefront of our farming communities minds.
Let us hope the government has learnt from its mistakes and takes swift steps to halt the further spread of the disease.
