TWO of the Midlands most promising squash stars both excelled in the recent British Junior Open at Sheffield.
Josh Owen and Libby Corke, products of the rapidly growing junior squash section at West Warwicks Sports Club, both performed superbly to further demonstrate the bright futures they have ahead of them in the game.
Libby played with flair and determination to finish 24th in the event in a tournament that further highlighted the ever increasing standard in women’s squash with girls from all over the world playing in the prestigious event.
The 14-year-old was handed a particularly tough draw, meeting a top seed from India in the second round. She fought all the way in a brutal four-game encounter, showing off her fighting capabilities to the full. In her remaining matches she won one and lost three but proved she is capable of competing at the top level.
Josh lost to one of the new breed of Egyptian superstars in the second round but won his next three matches before losing to the Indian number one, leaving him 18th overall.
Both players can be more than satisfied with their performances and can look forward to more success during the rest of the season.
West Warwicks has a history of producing professional squash players, dating back to the great Jonah Barrington in the 70s, and if anyone is interested in joining the junior programme you can speak to Junior Development Coach Deon Saffery on 07947 633785.
DEON Saffery was beaten by Tesni Evans in the final of the Welsh National Squash Championships recently.
Evans emerged a 3-1 winner as the duo, who have now contested the last two finals, produced some great squash in front of a healthy audience.
The first two games were shared but Evans went on to take control in the next two, controlling the T well to take the title.
Saffery heads to America this week to compete in the WSA tour.
