THE BOROUGH was transformed into a winter wonderland this week as the season's long-awaited first snow fell from the skies.

A blanket of the white stuff carpeted parks and gardens overnight on Sunday, but fears of hazardous driving conditions were not forthcoming and Monday morning rush-hour went off without a hitch.

Experts predicted a week of cold and icy conditions with snow possibly returning late tomorrow (Friday).

Observer photographer Neville Collins captured these images.
