BIRMINGHAM Brummies captain Danny King has won the annual 'Rider of the Night' award for 2012 after a season of consistently high scoring home performances at Perry Barr.
King scooped the award, based on the most 'rider of the night' weekly nominations, ahead of team-mate Ben Barker following a season long tussle.
The award, sponsored by city jewellers GH Moore and Son, of the Jewellery Quarter, caps a memorable 2012 season for the 26-year-old.
The Huntington based speedster has blossomed into a fully fledged Elite League heat leader for the Brummies and he has continued to forge a successful Swedish career with his club Vastervik reaching their play-off competition.
After spells with various clubs, 2012 was also the year King laid foundations for his British future, after the Brummies splashed out nearly £20,000 to buy him from Ipswich Witches.
King was delighted to take the award, saying: "To win this award ahead of my team-mates is pretty amazing considering the great year we had, finishing third in the Elite League.”
Brummies co-manager Phil Morris added: “Obviously there were many gold star home displays from all the team in such an outstandingly successful year for us, so I am sure Danny can feel very proud of this achievement.”
Darren Moore, of sponsors GH Moore and Son, said: “It was a great pleasure to present Danny with the Birmingham speedway rider of the night award for the 2012 season. Danny has been a great asset to Birmingham with his consistent riding and as an inspirational captain. It was a close contest for the award but Danny was a popular winner.”
