STUDENTS and staff at the college attended by tragic Hockley heath teenager Mikey Abdou - killed in a car crash in January 12 last year - have paid tribute to the popular 19-year-old.

More than 70 of Mikey's friends and teachers gathered in the grounds of St Paul's Square in Birmingham just before Christmas where they released balloons, each tied with a ribbon to raise awareness of the newly-founded Mikey Abdou Foundation children’s charity - the charity set up by Mikey's family in his memory.

Described as 'an immensely talented and promising artist' Mikey was studying A-levels in art, business and media studies before his untimely death.

A permanent memorial within the college’s entrance, created by his sister Kara, features an array of Mikey’s artwork.

Abbey College Birmingham Principal, Rachel Borland said: “Mikey is sadly missed by the entire college community and the balloon release was a very touching and poignant way for both his family and students and staff alike to remember him and also to raise awareness of the wonderful foundation established in his memory.”

The Mikey Abdou Foundation, founded by Mikey’s parents Dr & Mrs Abdou, aims to aid and support underprivileged children in education around the world, specifically raising money for children in Cairo, Egypt, as well as in the West Midlands.

The strictly not-for-profit foundation is currently in the process of identifying and forming affiliations with appropriate organisations, which can make a real difference.
