WORK officially began on the new heart for Shirley this week as Solihull Mayor Ken Hawkins 'broke the ground' of the new £85m Parkgate scheme.
Parkgate, will bring new shops and homes to Shirley town centre, together with up to 800 jobs, most of which will be sought from the local economy, breathing new life into the area.
During the period of construction over 200 people will be working on the development, many of whom will be visiting local retailers and food outlets bringing extra custom to the area.
The project will be completed by Easter 2014.
Robert Birch, of developer Shirley Advance said: “This is a great day. It’s been a long time coming but it’s all systems go now.
"We look forward to delivering a scheme that Shirley residents and business owners will be proud of.”
Councillor Hawkins added: “I’m very pleased to be able to help get work started and start moving towards a regenerated Shirley.
"I’m now looking forward to seeing the work develop and the changes to the area it will bring.”
Key dates over the coming months include:
* Demolitions – Westminster House and other buildings fronting Stratford Road (July/August)
* Basement excavation (August 2012 – February 2013)
* Highway works (August 2012 – April 2014)
