SHEEP farmer Helen Kaye has slammed the owner of a dog that savagely attacked one of her flock - and appealed for all owners to keep their dogs under control around livestock.

Lilly the sheep is lucky to be alive after the attack in which a dog got into her field in Marsh Lane, Hampton and viciously attacked her, leaving a massive gash in her neck.

Luckily for Helen, her father saw events unfold and was able to scare the dog off and look after the sheep until she and the vet arrived to stitch her up.

"If it hadn't been for dad Lilly would almost certainly have died - not only because the attack would have continued, but because he was able to alert us so quickly and we were able to save her life," said Helen.

Local Wildlife Crime Officer Andy Timmins was called in by Mrs Kaye to help track down the dog responsible - and warn other dog owners to keep their dogs on leads around livestock.

"PC Timmins has been great and has been putting up posters around the village, but sadly we haven't heard anything about who was responsible," added Helen.

"I'd obviously like to find the culprit, but more than that, I want to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else's animals.

"It is pretty easy for people to keep their dogs on a lead when they are around animals or in a new place where they don't know what's around the next corner - just a little common sense and good ownership is needed.

"We have all been throughly devastated that one of our animals has suffered so badly as the result of another person's irresponsibility."

Lilly is a breeding ewe and part of a breeding programme for the rare breed Ryeland Sheep in a bid to prevent them becoming endangered.

If you have information about the attack call Solihull Police on 101.
