Marc Jones has been jailed for burglaires targeting pensioners. s

ELDERLY residents in north Solihull "can feel safer in their own homes" following the jailing of a burglar who deliberately targeted pensioners.

Marc Jones was sentenced to 40 months in prison by a judge at Coventry Crown Court who heard how he used tools to prise window panes from their frames to gain access to at least four properties.

But during one attack – at the home of a 91-year-old woman in Smiths Wood – Jones cut his hand.

Forensics experts carried out a detailed search of the address and detected tiny droplets of blood which following analysis linked him to the offence.

And Solihull Police apprehended him in the early hours of January 26 when officers, responding to a 999 call reporting a break-in, wrestled the 27-year-old to the ground after a brief foot chase.

Unemployed Jones, from Wolesley Close in Smiths Wood, admitted one count of burglary and was sentenced on Friday (March 16) at Coventry Crown Court. He asked for three similar offences to be taken into consideration.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Ian Atherley from Solihull Police CID, said: "Jones is a cowardly thief who singled out the homes of elderly residents of Smiths Wood and Castle Bromwich.

"Since he was arrested in January there have been no similar offences in the area… elderly residents in north Solihull are now safer in their own homes."

Jones broke into the 91-year-old's home overnight between January 22 and 23 having removed a glass window pane and once inside snatched a television.

Following his arrest three days later he gave a series of 'no comment' interviews but later pleaded guilty at court.
