Sonic boom caused loud bang

A LOUD bang heard across the county yesterday evening (Thursday) was a sonic boom, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

The noise - heard around 6.15pm - was caused by a jet, a spokesman told the Observer. The Typhoon is believed to have been responding to a helicopter's emergency call issued by mistake.

West Midlands Police had earlier said it was unaware of where the noise stemmed from but did not regard it a police matter. The force added worried residents had flooded their phone lines in a bid to discover what it was.

People also took to social networking sites to try and find out what had caused the bang, with many saying their house had shaken.

An earth tremor had been another possible explanation mooted. The noise is reported to have also been heard in northern parts of the region and as far south as Oxfordshire, Swindon and Bath.
