THE DRIVER whose van crashed off a bridge and onto the M42 motorway below has died.
The 35-year-old from Shard End, Birmingham, lost his fight for life just before 7pm on Monday (March 19) while undergoing emergency treatment for multiple injuries at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.
His van has crashed through barriers on the A452 Coleshill island and dropped onto the motorway, colliding with a lorry and car, at 1.45pm.
When emergency crews arrived at the scene they found the man, who has yet to be named to allow time for relatives to be informed of his death, lying on the carriageway being cared for by fellow motorists.
It is believed he had been thrown from the vehicle in the smash.
He was anaesthetised at the scene and driven to hospital where doctors fought for several hours to save his life, eventually losing their battle at 6.49pm.
His next of kin were at the hospital when he died.
Specialist traffic officers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident but initial inquiries suggest the deceased lost control of his Nissan Cabstar van at the traffic island on the A452 near the junction of the A446 before crashing through safety barriers and landing on the southbound carriageway of the M42 below.
Specialist family liaison officers have been appointed and are supporting the man's family.
Sergeant David Lawrence, from the West Midlands Police Collision Investigation Unit, said: "I would like to thank those members of the public who demonstrated great courage by assisting the casualty at the scene of the collision.
"Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the driver."
Witnesses who have not yet spoken to police should call the West Midlands Police Collision Investigation Unit on 101.
