TALENTED youngster Tyron Amory has moved a step closer to signing a professional contract with Swindon Town after being selected to go through a week long boot camp at the League One club.
Amory, a 22-year-old defender, impressed Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio when competing in the final of Samsung’s nationwide Win A Pro Contract competition. He won his place in the final, where he lined up with ten other candidates to take on a Swindon XI at the County Ground, after making it through a series of regional trials.
Amory switched teams at half time, giving him chance to play alongside Town’s Mehdi Kerrouche and former AC Milan defender Alberton Comazzi.
“I felt I played well in the final. I got forward as much as I could and got some good crosses into the box,” said Amory, who plays for Barwell in the Southern League Premier Division.
“Naturally I’m a left-winger or a striker but I’ve developed into a left-back during the Win A Pro Contract process.
“I was absolutely buzzing when I found out I’d been picked to train with the first-team squad. I really couldn’t believe it.
“I spent time at Derby County as a youngster but my attitude wasn’t the best and I was released. Since then I’ve grown up, had a son, and started a career.
“Now I can’t wait to start training and to show Paolo Di Canio what I can do. It would be amazing to win a contract with Swindon,” he added.
Di Canio has chosen Tyron and three other Win A Pro Contract finalists to attend the boot camp. One of them will be rewarded with the life-changing one-year professional contract.
“Tyron has been very consistent throughout the competition and he impressed me again during the final,” Di Canio said.
“I moved him onto the Swindon team to see how he would adapt to playing with professional players. I thought he did very well.
“He worked extremely hard and still managed to show his ability. He deserves a chance to train with my squad.
“It will be a tough week for him but it will allow me time to decide whether he has what it takes to make it as a professional.
“Samsung are giving one player an amazing opportunity. Tyron will need to show that he has the skill, fitness and attitude to make it. I’m sure he will give it his best.”
The Samsung Win a Pro Contract winner will be announced at half time during Swindon’s League Two clash with Accrington Stanley on February 25.
