Football
Moors begin the new year with home defeat

Solihull Moors 1 Corby Town 2

Conference North

MOORS were unable to record consecutive victories against Corby Town as the visitors gained quick revenge for their Boxing Day defeat at Damson Park on Sunday.

The hosts were dominant for long periods against a Corby side who they had beaten in their previous five meetings, but failure to turn possession and chances into goals meant it was the visitors who were celebrating at the final whistle.

Ryan Beswick was first to go close for the home side with a shot that deflected wide before Jordan Fitzpatrick and Dean Bennett also went close.

Junior English was the next to go close for Marcus Bignot’s men but it was Corby who broke the deadlock when Mark Jones converted after an initial shot had been blocked.

Moors continued to apply the pressure and were working the ball from back to front well but still they no enjoyed no joy in front of goal despite the best efforts of Gavin Hurren and Beswick.

Corby went close to doubling their advantage in the 71st minute when Jones tried to react to a Jasbir Singh save but he was unable to force the ball home.

They did add a second though as the game approached full time and it was that man Jones who beat Singh to the ball to poke home.

A foul on English in the penalty box finally allowed Moors to pull one back when Richard Walker fired home from the spot in injury time but it was too little too late for the hosts who will look to bounce back when they travel to Gloucester City on Saturday.
