Impressive Eds go top

SATURDAY’S bonus point victory ensured Edwardians climbed to the top of the table, holding a three-point advantage over Telford Hornets with eight games of the season remaining.

The hosts made a positive start but Eds dealt well with what they could throw at them before going on to take the lead.

Having gained the upper hand in the scrum, it came as no surprise that the first score was a pushover try, Andrew Jervis the man to touch down.

Eds went further clear when captain Michael Bourke was on the end of a good backs move to score a try converted by Dave Gray but he injured himself in the process.

Second row Phil Bower was the next man to cross after picking up from the back of a ruck and barging over for the final action of the first half.

The visitors remained on the front foot at the start of the second half and Dave Gray continued the scoring with a try he converted himself after being fed by Mark Garrick.

Clee Hill responded with a converted try for their only points of the afternoon but Eds had the final say and finished in style as centres John Ferdinand and Morgan Hope combined well to put Garrick through for a score under the posts, Gray converted.

Eds will aim to cement their place at the top of the table when they entertain Tenbury on Saturday (2.15pm).

THE 2nds were also in impressive form to defeat Hewell Vikings 22-7.

Gary Hawkins set them on their way with the first try of the afternoon but it was Hewell who went in ahead at the interval thanks to a converted try.

Three second half tries ensured Eds were to emerge victorious though with Jim Morgan, James Panter and Hawkins crossing the whitewash, Hawkins converted his own try to complete the scoring.
