SPECIALIST contractors have been hired to remove asbestos found in the roof of the old Tudor Grange Leisure Centre.
Council officials have confirmed the presence of the hazardous substance but have insisted there is no threat to public health.
The demolition of the building and replacement car park is expected to remain on course and be completed by the end of summer.
Nick Garnett, Head of Leisure Services at Solihull Council said it was perfectly normal to find asbestos in such an old building.
"We have known about asbestos in the building and along with our building contractors Rivendell have planned in advance to deal with the asbestos as part of the demolition."
He added: "Specialist contractors have been hired to remove the asbestos according to strict Health and Safety Executive guidelines."
The old Tudor Grange Leisure Centre has been replaced by a £12m state-of-the-art centre, which includes brand new fitness suite, a 25-metre long, eight lane swimming pool, a health suite and treatment room and even a game of indoor tennis.
The centre’s opening hours are set to be 7am–10pm Monday to Friday and 8am–6pm at weekends.
People who want to find out more about the new leisure centre, how to book, how to become a member etc should contact 0121 705 6371 or go to www.leisure-centre.com.
THE OLD Tudor Grange Leisure Centre will be levelled and replaced with car park by late summer.
